Chocolate Cake Donuts in the Oven!

These days everyone is making bread. But they’re making sourdough because it doesn’t require yeast, which is apparently very hard to find.

You don’t need yeast to make these donuts. And they’re probably a lot healthier than cake donuts you’d purchase. They’re light and fluffy with just enough sugar to allow for toppings or glaze.

Baked Chocolate Donuts Recipe Hijabs and Aprons

Ingredients (6 donuts)

  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour

  • 1/3 cup (~25g) cocoa powder

  • 1/2 cup (~90g) brown sugar

  • 1/2 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 large egg at room temp

  • 1/3 cup (85mL) milk, room temp

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 tsp vinegar or 1 tbsp sour cream or yogurt

  • 3 tbsp (35mL) of vegetable oil

  • Donut Pan (I use this one)

  • Optional: sprinkles, coconut flakes, toppings, etc.

For the Ganache Topping

  • 1/2 cup (~100g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

  • 2 tbsp heavy cream

Recipe

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  2. In a large bowl, mix together the dry ingredients.

  3. In a smaller bowl, whisk the egg. Then whisk in the rest of the wet ingredients. The vinegar/sour cream/yogurt might make the milk curdle a little and that’s totally fine.

  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, and gently stir until incorporated. Don’t beat/whip it.

  5. Lightly grease your donut pan. Fill each pan until just below the level of the middle-stick-thing. About 3/4 full.

  6. Bake for 11 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

  7. Let the donuts set completely before fixing the donut holes and before glazing them.

FOR THE CHOCOLATE ICING & TOPPINGS

  1. Set up a double boiler. Put the chocolate chips and heavy cream in a bowl that is large enough so its bottom doesn’t touch the hot water, as well as large enough to dip the donuts into.

  2. Stir until you get a smooth consistency.

  3. If you’re using sprinkles, pour them into a bowl large enough to dip the donuts into.

  4. Dip each cooled donut into the chocolate icing. Carefully lift out of the chocolate and slowly turn the donut as you flip it right-side-up so that the drippings stay on top instead of, well, dripping.

  5. Immediately dip the chocolate-dipped side of the donut into the sprinkles and lift. You’ll get a nice even layer this way! If you want your sprinkles to be more sparse, you can sprinkle them on by hand (as well as any other toppings such as coconut flakes).

Enjoy!
